The COP Simulation- debating Climate Change

In July, Godalming College Geography students attended the annual conferences hosted by Dr David Faraday at Godalming Council Chambers.

Students were introduced to computer simulation software designed by MIT in Boston and used by the world’s leaders at the COP climate summits. They were assigned roles as representatives of different groups, and discussed and negotiated their way through a series of stages which ultimately resulted in a plan to keep global warning below 2°C and as close to 1.5°C as possible.

The group were very engaged and quickly grasped that climate change needs to be tackled from many different angles and that this poses many challenges. One of our students, Louise S said "The COP simulation was an incredible experience where I got to work with and against my classmates to try and help the planet’s future temperatures to be lowered as much as possible to contradict the global warming the world has seen so far."

The event was extremely well attended and the students engaged very well with the topic.
